Technically speaking, Air conditioning is the cooling and dehumidification of indoor air for thermal comfort. Broadly, it refers to, any form of cooling, heating, ventilation or disinfection that modifies the condition of air to make the atmosphere conducive to comfort.

Home air conditioning

Whether it’s scorching summers or spine-chilling winters; unbearable humid conditions or just agonizing dry spells of weather, it has become nearly impossible for human civilization to do without what can be best described as one of the most remarkable invention of the modern times- yes, ‘the air-conditioning’!

Air Conditioner:

Air conditioners are the devices that provide comfort in a building, a room, or an automobile, during extreme weather conditions- hot or cold. Air conditioners are home appliances, systems or mechanisms, which serve to extract heat from an area via a refrigeration cycle. The system that, along with air conditioning, also provides heating and ventilation is the HVAC. Depending upon the size of the area, which you want to cool and dehumidify, and your budget, you can choose from various options available for air conditioning.

Two most common types of air-conditioning are:

•Room air-conditioning
•Central Air conditioning

Room Air conditioning:

If you are looking for an air-conditioning of your home, room air-conditioning would perhaps suit you the most. Whether mounted in a window or wall, this type of air conditioner plugs into a standard electrical outlet and does not need special wiring. Room air conditioners come in two forms: unitary and packaged terminal PTAC systems or split systems. Unitary systems, the common one-room air conditioners, sit in a window or wall opening, with interior controls. The unit draws heat from the room and discharges it into the environment. A large house or a building like a hotel or an office may have several such units, with each room requiring cooling separately.

Split air conditioning systems, also known as ductless, or PTAC, are frequently in use in hotels. They consist of two separate units (terminal packages), the evaporative unit on the exterior and the condensing unit on the interior, with tubing passing through the wall and connecting them. While room air conditioning provides maximum flexibility, when cooling many rooms it is generally more expensive than central air conditioning.

Central Air-Conditioning:

Central air conditioning, commonly referred to as central air (U.S.) is an air conditioning system, which uses ducts to distribute cooled and dehumidified air to more than one room. It may also use pipes to distribute chilled water to heat exchangers. The purpose of a central air conditioner is to cool your entire house/building/multiplex/shopping mall at once, using a condenser (usually located outside) and a fan-and-coil system, and ductwork that brings the cooled air to each room, and returns the air for cooling again.

Because the central air conditioning unit is located outside the home, it offers a lower level of indoor noise than a regular room conditioner.

AC units

It is important to have a perfect understanding of the types of AC units available in the market when you are selecting one for your requirement. Every unit has its own share of advantages and disadvantages.

Types of AC units:

•Single-Package Central Air - Single package central air conditioners are most common in use in industrial applications. All of the components are mounted into one "package" which is typically mounted on the roof of a building (occasionally on a wall).

•Central Air Conditioning (ducted A/C) - Central air conditioning allows you to cool all parts of a house evenly and quietly. This is what people most commonly think of when they speak of wanting air conditioning. This requires that your house/building should have ducting to the various rooms (usually the same ducting you use for your central heat).

•Split air-conditioning unit: It allows you to place the noisy portion or your cooling unit outside where it will be less noticeable. It is also known as PTAC or ductless AC unit.

•Wall-mounted or Window or Portable Air Conditioning- Though it will be a bit noisier, but this is the most economical; hence popular AC unit available in the market. Though it has a limited cooling range, it will surely make a significant difference on the temperature of your room.

•Evaporation coolers - Also known as "swamp coolers", evaporation coolers pull air through damp pads thereby cooling it, as the air evaporates the water that comes in touch with it.

AC repair

Home air conditioners require regular maintenance. This means cleaning and replacement of filters changed every few months. If you live in an area that is very dusty you may have to change filters every couple of months. However, when your air conditioner needs more than regular maintenance, hiring a professional service technician is certainly, a good idea. A well-trained technician will find and fix problems in your air conditioning system in the following way:

• checking for correct amount of refrigerant;
• testing for refrigerant leaks
• capturing any refrigerant that must be evacuated from the system,
• checking for and seal duct leakage in any part of your system
• measuring air-flow through the evaporator coil;
• verifying the correct electric control sequence
• Oiling motors and checking belts for tightness and wear, etc.

Solar Air conditioning:

The hot sun that makes life unbearable sometimes, can also deliver energy to cool your rooms. Yes, with the help of solar air-conditioning that makes use of solar thermal energy, this is possible. The cold or hot (depending upon the season) water goes to the air-handling units installed in the building and in the form of cold or hot air, the building is air-conditioned.

Benefits of Solar Air conditioning:

•Good for the environment as it uses renewable source of energy.
•Cost effective as it uses no electric power.
